Limoges ~ Capital of Limousin

Limoges Indoor Market, Limousin

Limoges, famous for its fine Limousin porcelain is not "just another town", it is a fascinating city, steeped in history. Its lurid past is recaptured time and again in the ancient buildings, quaint old streets, museums, gardens and galleries. Worth a visit is the cathedral, the butchers quarter and the recently restored train station. Modern day Limoges is home to trendy bars, shops, cinemas and restaurants renowned for their regional dishes. Most people are seduced by the beautiful Limousin countryside, but a tour of Limoges is worth every inch of worn shoe leather.

Perigueux ~ Capital of The Dordogne

Perigueux, the Dordogne

Right in the heart of the Dordogne and close to other interesting sites, Perigueux is a beautiful mix of medieval and renaissance buildings. There are attractive boulevards, and a region of streets lined with medieval houses that is a very pleasant place for a wander. Most 'action' in the town is focussed around the cathedral. The cathedral of St. Front was built between 984 and 1047 on the site of the 6th century chapel built over the tomb of St Front. The 'Museum of Perigord' is in the town and houses some important prehistoric and roman artefacts. The medieval town is a delight to visit, especially on market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays).

Angouleme ~ Capital of Charente

Angouleme ~ Charente

Angouleme is an ancient city situated on a hill encircled by ramparts with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and the Charente river. The Hotel de Ville on the site of the château of the Counts of Angouleme still retains two of the original château towers and now houses a museum of painting and archaeology. Angouleme, famous for paper making since the 14th century is home to the Musee du Papier where you can see how it is made. Or, how about a visit to the chocolate factory on the outskirts of town? Although an ancient city, Angouleme boasts many modern amenities such as boat hire, horse riding, fishing, swimming, golf, etc.
